The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team overwhelmed Florence 9-0 after escaping Austin Achieve with a win in penalty kicks Feb. 28.
The win against Achieve clinched a playoff berth.
In a contest played before the program honored its seniors and their parents March 3, head coach Abigail Blunt made a deal with her players and Allison Harris in the spirit of the occasion.
If the Lady Mustangs led 2-0 at the half against Florence, Harris would exit the contest as the goalie at the intermission and re-enter as a striker.
The result? Harris, who went to goalie four years ago after playing on the field from the time she picked up the sport, scored three goals and assisted two others in the second half.
Other goals were scored by Sachi Marcum, Miley Bolanos, Haley France, Clarissa Mata and Elizabeth Busby.
Blunt thoroughly enjoyed watching the Lady Mustangs’ offensive onslaught and defensive shutdown as much as the fans.
“The defense did a good job,” she said. “(Goalie Gabriella Underwood) only had to make one save. One of the things we’re looking for is preparation for the playoffs. We had different scenarios, and we changed our line-up.”
Achieve and Marble Falls played to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. Marble Falls won on penalty kicks scored by Odessa Aylesworth, Mata and Cali Brydon.
“We struggled against Achieve,” Blunt said. “Against Florence, it was better play and better building a play. It shows the team can rebound and not get stuck in our heads.”
As she hugged her players, graduates and parents, Blunt credited many for the Lady Mustangs qualifying for the postseason.
“I’m really proud of our seniors,” she said. “Hands down, they’re one of the best senior classes I’ve ever coached from personality to skill.”
Marble Falls travels to Jarrell for a 5 p.m. match Tuesday, March 7, and hosts Burnet at 7 p.m. Friday, March 10.
